In January 2009, as part of his State of the City address, Mayor Mark Kingseed outlined a number of initiatives that City is taking to Go Green.
RECYLCING PROGRAM
In 2008, Centerville residents recycled 1,407 tons of plastic containers, newspapers and aluminum cans, down 6% from 2007 and 13% from 2006. Click here to see the chart.
The City encourages all residents to participate in the Citys co-mingled recycling program that is provided at no additional cost. Recyclable items must be placed in a separate container with a fluorescent orange RECYCLABLES sticker on it. Stickers are available free of charge at the City Municipal Building, 100 W. Spring Valley Rd. and the Public Works Department, 7970 S. Suburban Rd. If you need a sticker, please call Public Works at (937) 428-4782 and a sticker will be mailed out to you. T-SHIRT CONTEST
Centerville High School junior Kacie Kumar is the winner of the City of Centervilles Go Green design contest. Her design is featured on a t-shirt that the City is using to promote its Go Green campaign. The t-shirts will be worn by Centerville staff, volunteers, and others at various community events to promote environmental awareness. The winners were selected by the environmental committee from more than 120 entries. For her award winning design, Kumar received $150. CHS freshman Kris Williams received second place honors and $50. Both were recognized at June's Council meeting. Click here to see the winning design.
NEWSLETTERS
In April 2009, the City began printing the Centerville Town Crier on Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper. FSC paper is guaranteed to come from certified, renewable and responsibly managed forests. The paper chosen for the Town Crier is made from 50 percent recycled paper and 25 percent post-consumer waste. Residents also now have the option to receive the Town Crier electronically instead of via mail. Click here to sign up.
In addition, Centerville businesses have the option to receive the Centerville Commerce newsletter electronically instead of via mail. Electronic delivery of the newsletter will reduce the Citys volume of paper consumption, as well as printing and mailing costs. Click here to sign up.
ENERGY STAR
In March 2009, The City of Centerville joined Energy Star as a partner, a program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. By joining this program, the City made a fundamental commitment to protect the environment through the continuous improvement of its energy performance.
NEW PUBLIC WORKS FACILITY
The new Public Works Facility will incorporate many environmentally friendly green features, and will provide a much safer and efficient work environment for Public Works employees. Click here to view the plans.
RECYCLING INCENTIVE GRANT PROGRAM
On May 28, 2008, the Montgomery County Solid Waste Management Policy Committee awarded an Incentive Grant to the City of Centerville for the purchase of 30 recycling containers to expand the Citys recycling capabilities at special events. With the purchase of 30 containers just for recycling, each of these containers has a blue body with a can collar, a hot stamp of the Citys seal, and a serial number.
The City will utilize these containers to collect and recycle materials at the Summer Concerts Series and the Americana Festival this year and future years. The City is also using the containers at Benhams Grove to separate waste from recyclables at events.
HYBRID VEHICLES
After reviewing the need for improving fuel economy and reducing greenhouse emissions, the City decided to purchase 3 hybrid vehicles in 2008. The 4 cylinder engine operates in conjunction with a battery powered electric motor. When the power demand is low (at low speeds and while stopped), the vehicle operates solely on battery power, providing an overall fuel economy rating of 30 mpg in the City.
